Starting a regular meditation practice is an amazing way to boost your mental health and calm your mind. Many people swear by meditation, but for a beginner, it can be difficult to start. Many people have this idea that you have to meditate for hours while having zero thoughts, otherwise, you’re doing it wrong. However, that could not be further from the truth – so how do you start?
As an esteemed researcher in the field of psychiatry, Julio Licinio is passionate about mental health. Today he shares 4 tips to get you started in your meditation practice.
- Meditate at the same time each day, even if it is only for ten minutes. You don’t have to meditate for a long time to feel its benefits, but consistency is key.
- Pick a position that is comfortable for you. You don’t have to sit cross-legged to meditate. In fact, there are tons of different positions you can meditate in – sitting, lying down, or even walking or running.
- Listening to a guided meditation is a great way to start off if you need help staying focused. You can try silent meditation, later on, to get deeper into the practice.
- Allow yourself to breathe deeply and naturally.
